چکیده

Noble metals and gases are very sensitive to the late accretion to the Earth of asteroids and comets. We present mass balance arguments based on these elements that indicate that 0.7 − 2.7 × 10 kg of extraterrestrial bodies struck the Earth after core formation and that comets comprised less than 10 by mass of the impacting population. These results imply that the dynamics of asteroids and comets changed drastically with time and that biogenic elements and prebiotic molecules were not delivered to the Earth by comets but rather by carbonaceous

Noble Gases in Ice Cores: Indicators of the Earth’s Climate History

Polar ice cores constitute excellent archives of past environmental conditions and provide us with glimpses into the Earth’s climatic history over hundreds of thousands of years. For the past two decades, noble gases, used as conservative tracers, have played a substantial role in extracting information from these archives. Noble gas analysis can be performed on two types of ice core samples. F...

A model to explain the various paradoxes associated with mantle noble gas geochemistry.

As a result of an energetic accretion, the Earth is a volatile-poor and strongly differentiated planet. The volatile elements can be accounted for by a late veneer ( approximately 1% of total mass of the Earth). The incompatible elements are strongly concentrated into the exosphere (atmosphere, oceans, sediments, and crust) and upper mantle. Recent geochemical models invoke a large primordial u...

The Possibility of Selective Adsorption and Sensing of the Noble Gaseous Species by the C20 Fullerene, the Graphene Sheets, and the N4B4 Cluster

There are only a handful reports about the sensor systems having the ability of detecting the existence of the noble gases. Chemical reluctance of these gaseous species causes them to have no chemical interactions like hydrogen bonding with the chemically designed nano-sized sensors. Noble gasses usually have no atomic charges nor do change the total polarity of the molecular sensor systems. Th...

Activation Strategies for Enhancement the Catalytic Activity of Gold Nanocatalysts

Recent advances in nanoscience have led to the development of numerous methodologiesfor controlled synthesis of mono dispersed nanoparticles and/or nanoclusters via surface stabilization by organic capping ligands. The application of these nanoparticles in catalysis and other fields often requires the removal of organic ligands. It is known that the removal of organic capping agents or or...

Cosmic-ray strangelets in the Earth’s atmosphere

If strange quark matter is stable in small lumps, we expect to find such lumps, called “strangelets”, on Earth due to a steady flux in cosmic rays. Based on recent model predictions for this flux, we find that strangelets corresponding to gaseous elements (noble gases, N, and O) accumulate in the atmosphere at high concentration. Metallic and semimetallic strangelets accumulate in suprisingly h...
